Question by hamsterbabies: How do I get rid of junk mail sent to my mailbox?
I receive ads from 3 grocery stores and countless “value coupons” in my mail every week. I am so tired of all the junk mail!! This produces tons of needless trash to us and the environment.

Junk mail that come with ‘paid postage’ envelopes, write in bold letters across the application to “please, remove my name from your mailing list”. This may take a few times but eventually your name will be removed from that company’s mailing list. Or call their 800 # and ask them to remove your name, be prepared to give the long Delivery Account Number that will be on that application.

Items that are sent to a everyone as bulk mail or ‘you or current resident’, you will still receive these items – - it goes to every mail box.

You can reduce the amount of junk mail you get by using the opt out process offered by the Direct Marketing Association.

Take a look at this article:

It mentions a site that you can use to stop junk mail:

optoutprescreen.com

I hope it helps!

You have to notify the grocery stores to let them know that you no longer want to recieve their advertisements. You can also fill out a form online, I believe, to discontinue getting all boxholders. Since the post office is not a government agency and doesn’t use tax dollars, the revenue the post office takes in is through bulk mail. The cost paid by mailers for bulk mail is what pays the salaries of carriers (rural), the time for city carriers and clerks working at the post office. I think the company that took over advo is called Valassis. You can contact them to discontinue their weekly boxholder. Carriers are required to deliver boxholders to customers unless a form is on file to not deliver to said boxholders. If your weekly boxholder from valassis is addressed, you live on a city route. Rural valassis boxholders have no address on them, but instead just say “Residential Customer.”
Look at the stamp corner of your mail pieces. If it says “Presort Standard” or “Prst Std” or something such as that, you can go right ahead and shred it. If it says first class, it is best to open it. Second class mail such as newspapers and magazines do not have postage on them. It is treated as first class mail.
I hope I have been of help to you with your questions. I don’t like recieving the “junk mail” either, but that “junk mail” pays my salary and helps me maintain my rural delivery vehicle. I throw alot of it straight into the trash when I get it at my own house.
